Experience
the Humpback Whales
Each year, from June through September, humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to
Tonga, to give birth and then mate in the warm, sheltered waters of Vava'u. Tonga has
strict guidelines on how close a boat may approach a group of whales. But the whales often
come up and swim curiously around Melinda. Tonga is the only country that allows swimming
with whales, and we have the opportunity to get in the water with them, it can be a life
changing experience! From onboard Melinda there are excellent opportunities to observe close-up, out-of-the-water
behaviors like a mother whale teaching her calf to breach, or a group of males displaying
competitive tail slapping. Melinda Sea Adventures is one of five tour operators licensed
for whale-watching in Vava'u. |
