Tongan Passport Requirements

The following information is extracted from a circular provided in 1997 from the Tonga Consulate in San Francisco. Before taking any action based on this information, do confirm with your nearest consulate the validity of the shown information.


Passport Renewal

All passports are to be renewed 10 years after the date of issuance; which is stipulated on the cover page and on page 4; and the following is required when applicants keep their appointments at this office:

  1. Expired Passport
  2. 3 Passport photographs (Full frontal face view)
  3. Marriage certificate (if applicant needs to change her maiden name to her married name)
  4. Birth Certificate (If included in mother's passport)
  5. Legal Documents if you need to change your name, eg. Birth certificate, affidavit of amendment.
  6. Resident Alien Card (Green Card) or any other ID
  7. A fee of USD$50.00 in cash or money order only

Passport Extensions

All passports are required to be extended after 5 years from the date of issuance; which can be referred to on the cover page and on the fourth page; with the following requirements:

  1. Current Passport
  2. Marriage Certificate (if applicant needs to change her maiden name to her married name)
  3. A Fee of USD$20.00 in cash or Money Order only.

Certificate of Identity

Those people who have lost their passports and are required to travel urgently to Tonga may apply for this travel document with the following requirements.

  1. Resident Alien Card (Green Card) or any other photo ID or birth certificate
  2. 3 Passport Photographs (full frontal view)
  3. A fee of USD$20.00 in cash or Money Order only
  4. The certificate of identity is valid for a one-way journey to Tonga where the applicant must apply for a new passport if his/her lost passport was issued in Tonga.

Lost Passports

An applicant may only be issued with a new passport once clearance over his/her lost passport details has been received from The Tonga Immigration Department. The following must be submitted to the Immigration Office either directly or with assistance from relatives residing in Tonga or through contact with the Consulate General.

  1. Full names as were written exactly in the lost passport
  2. Place and date of birth
  3. Place and date of issuance of lost passport (if possible)
  4. Number of lost passport (if possible)
  5. Residence telephone number to be contacted once clearance has been received from Tonga.
