Impeachment proceedings postponed then cancelled
The Tonga Legislative Assembly accepted an appeal by the Minister for Law under impeachment proceedings for a later hearing which included the appointments of the Minister of Police and Hon. Tu'ivakanö as assistants to the Assembly's appointed prosecutor Mr. Siosifa Masao Paasi. Later in the week, the Legislative Assembly withdrew all proceedings against the Minister for Law after the Minister apologised in Parliament.
After a lengthy debate in Parliament where opponents and supporters of the impeachment process voiced their concerns and interpretations, a vote in the house disposed of the proceedings.
The Minister's New Zealand based Lawyer earlier denied any wrong doings by the Minister and argued against the validity of the Parliament trialing individuals on constitutional matters.

Pacific Islands Monthly - Sept. "Fiji's Constitution, is it all it promises to be?"
Editorial: Beyond the Constitution. "As Fiji's political leaders pat themselves on the back amid the jubilation, celebration and international congratulation over the country's new constitution, there remains the sobering realisation that the constitution is merely the means to an end. To truly turn Fiji from a grouping of race-bound communities into a liberated and democratic society free from discrimination requires genuine commitment form the people without which the document will be just that -- a piece of paper."
