Fire claims the life of family members

The fire that burnt the family house finally claimed the life of the mother, after claiming the life of the three children. Nonga Manu of Tokomololo finally succumbed to the burns she sustained in the fire that burned their family dwelling on October 22nd.

Two of the children died in the fire (age 5 and 3) and the mothers unborn child died soon after from the effects of the fire. Two children (age 4 and 8) and a husband survive the mother.

Police reports indicate the fire started when the mother was lighting the family's kerosene lamp while the lamp was still live. The resulting fire could not be stopped before it took hold of the house.

National Side (Ikale Tahi) defeated in cliff hanger with the Maori All Blacks

The Maori all-blacks completed a successful touring season by defeating the Tonga national side (Ikale Tahi) 29 points to 20 in a cliff hanger match. The Maori all blacks have shown a determined, forward control football game while in Tonga (two games in total) lacking the flare shown by the Tongan teams but taking home the prize of three wins, zero losses.

In both games the Tongan sides took early leads, but the determined Maori team continued to play steady, controlled football which (assisted by a brilliant goal-kicking fly-half) saw them take the lead when it counted, when the whistle blew.

'Atele, Tonga College, celebrates 114th Anniversay

'Atele college celebrated its 114th anniversary on Saturday with students, ex-students and friends of the college. Teti Pahulu (president of the 7th Day Adventist Church) gave commemorative sermon

The celebrations netted $2,800 in donations, excluding the funds collected by students in the sale of their prepared lunches (tunu)

Time Tonga editor returns to meet the judge

The Taimi of Tonga editor retuned on Monday to have his day in court on four charges from between 1995-1996.

Dateline lays foundations for the year 2000

The Dateline hotel will lay foundations this Saturday beginning a US$15 million renovation, upgrade, extension project. Funding is provided by Resdiential Resources Inc., (USA) and construction will be provided by Swinerton and Crosby Architectural Group.

Vaiola Hospital recieves new blood sugar testing machine

The Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney, Australia delivered a new blood test machine model DCA2000 to the Vaiola Hospital purported to test for HbAIc (Clycated Haemoglobin) in the blood. Doct Stephen Colaguiri, and was on hand to install and test the machinery

Vaokakala Paaongo - Dux Liahona High School

With the external exams still under way, Liahona's early semester break allows us to learn about their highest academic achievers well before other schools have prepared for holidays. 2nd in the year was Paula Tautua'a, 16, of Tokomololo.

At 'Eua's Mormon middle school, Sela Mone Lasalosi was captain for 1996 (form 2). Sipola Pakalani from Kolomaile was captain of form 1.

Taufa'ahau Pilolevu College, Ha'apai, this year has its first candidates for the Form 6 external examinations.

Trade balance figures for Augsut show a trade deficit of $9.5 million.

Life Line opens new offices

Life Line opened new offices within the Channel 7 complex on November 7. The telephone help line service, mirrored on similar services in Australia, will transition to a new telephone number 23-000 on November 12.

Ha'apai's new wharf, Uafu Taufa'ahau, is expected to be opened by King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV on December 4.
