Marijuana Grower - Court proceedings

Oct 24th, Tonga police officers raided a neglected farm plot to find Mateaki Lolohea (28 of Ma'ufanga) in a field of cannabis. Seini Brown of Liahona was also apprehended for possession of marijuana although there is no indication in the paper whether the two incidents are related. From the farm plot police officers uprooted 87 plants and have sent specimens to New Zealand for authentication before the court case can proceed.

Squash

Nearly 7,000 tons of squash have been exported this harvest to Japan. The three vessels carrying the cargoes have been the MV Chiricana, MV Sashima, and MV Asahi. Growers expect to export around 10,000 tons to Japan this year.

Acupuncturist performs apparent miracles

An acupuncturist visting the islands (Dr Siuun Shui) from Korea seems to be performing amazing miracle cures with his needles. On an island new to the concept of acupuncture, the apparent cures attributablet to Dr Shui's work seem miraculous. Kitonga Havili, 56 years from Ma'ufanga, bed ridden for three years is again able to make use of his legs, walk around albeit slowly.

Similarly, other such stories abound of the Drs visit.

744 students to sit Pacific Senior Secondary Certificate

744 students from 11 colleges have registered for the PSSC examinations to be held November 5th to 15th. The PSSC replaces the previous University Entrance Exam (which itself replaced the Victorian High School Certificate)

Meanwhile, local students in Form 5 will sit the Tonga School Certificate between November 12 - 29. Over 1,000 form 5 students are expected to sit the exam.
