The Free Wesleyan Conference is in full swing and the greatest attraction is the feasting and feasting and feasting. So, if you've heard of our dieting projects, well that maybe so but at this time of year everything is on hold.
FWC Selection. Rev. 'Alifeleti Mone was re-elected to the post of President of the General Conference and Rev. Penisimani Fonua as Secretary of the Conference. Government Pay Raise. The government must have been doing something right, or they expect to, because they have just authorised a pay raise of 20% for all employees. 10 percent si to be awarded starting July 1st, while the other 10% will be awarded Jan 1st, 2001. Interestingly enough the pay raise is to be funded through existing resources and no new funds will be required. Apparently all those people owing the government money will be rushing in to pay out their debts so the pay raise can be put through. The other alternative for government is to sack enough people to cover the 10% required by those left in government. Of course, the official line is that savings will be gained through better management of proposed new posts expenditures. NZ aid - 'Eua primary schools. Houma, Tufuvai and 'Ohonua government primary schools recieved further funding assistance through the NZ High Commission. The aid went into various projects of Teacher housing and in one case a toilet block which together were valued at over TOP$100,000. This increases the NZ aid program to 'Eua's primary schools over the past three years to well over TOP$500,000. Vava'u Bi-Elections. Following the death of William Harris, former Vava'u No. 1 representative to the Legislative Assembly, Vava'u will hold a bi-electin on May 18 from among five candidates. Candidates are: Koliniasi Afuha'amango of Neiafu; Masao Paasi 64 of Tu'anekivale; Kelepi Piukala, 60 of Pangaimotu; To'imoana Taufateau, 42 of 'Utungake; and Makasini Fonua, 36 of 'Olo'ua.
